Favourite Joint Issue

I love this Joint Issue (Ireland-Belgium) 1995. It commemorates the Battle of Fontenoy fought on 11th May 1745.

Stamp Blog 22

The Irish stamp was postmarked in Limerick, the final battle of the Jacobite-Wiliamite Wars in Ireland (1692) after which the Irish (known as the Wild Geese) left the country to join the French Army. Fontenoy (where the Belgian stamp was postmarked) is in modern Belgium.

The Celtic Cross depicted on the stamp and postmark is a monument on the Battlefield.

The Soldiers and Flags on the card are from Dillons Regiment. The Soldiers in the stamp are from Dillons and Clares Regiment.
