Irish Stamp Programme 2017

This is the Stamp Programme for 2017. I stress that it is provisional and subject to change.

Two interesting issues.

Thomas F Meagher was an Irish patriot who was sentenced to death but this was commuted to transportation to Australia. He made his way to the United States of America and commanded the Irish Brigade of the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was later Governor of Montana and died in (possibly) mysterious circumstances in 1867.

Meagher is also credited with designing the flag (orange, white and green tricolour, modelled on France) which would be later adapted as the (green, white and orange tricolour) National Flag of Ireland.

Che Guevara, the iconic socialist revolutionary was killed in Bolivia in 1967. He was born in Argentina as Ernesto Che Guevara Lynch. He was part of the Irish diaspora in South America. He had visited Ireland in the 1960s.
