As Britain begged and grovelled to get into the (then) Common Market fifty years ago, my late father said that General d Gaulle of France and his celebrated “Non!” was correct. “The English will never join a club where they cant be in charge”.
And so it is. For all the economic benefits of “Europe”, the British never actually liked it and certainly never loved it. I cant say that I blame them. It will eventually fail. It is certainly possible for a French person to love France and an Estonian person to love Estonia and a Catalan person to love Catalonia and a Scottish person to love Scotland…..but who would ever stand up for the so-called European anthem or salute the so-called European flag?
The campaign for Britain to leave Europe began the day after Britain joined Europe. So finally 52% of the British population got their wish. There are British swivel-eyed rednecks who believe they can make “Britain great again” and that seems very unlikely.
I found this in some kiloware yesterday. Back in 2010, someone in Plymouth, England was attaching political stickers to their mail.
In the BREXIT Referendum last year, the person who attached the sticker got to vote. So did I.
And the pantomime of Britain leaving the EU has certainly amused me. But it seems simplistic to think that it is a straight choice between “Europe” and the “United Kingdom”. Europeans are witnessing the final years of the “United Kingdom”.
